Weekly Update - 15th March 2011

Mr Rutter - 15 Mar 2018

A big ‘Yo Ho’ from Oak Class!

This week we have continued our sea adventures by learning about pirates – including some infamous pirates such as Blackbeard and Anne Bonny. We imagined what it would be like to sail on a pirate ship, thinking about the sights, sounds, smells and feelings that we might experience. We wrote some exciting descriptions based on this, and we also made our own pirate fact files to show off our knowledge. It was interesting to compare the technology available to pirates with the Titanic and with modern shipping. The children have loved exploring this as part of our Topic which has all been planned using their ideas.

We finally had our World Book Day on Monday – the children really loved talking about the characters that they came dressed up as. We spent the morning writing a story which included the characters that we were all dressed up as. Who would have thought that Alice in Wonderland and Iron Man would make such a great team? We also did some surveys about which book was the most popular using tally charts. Our afternoon was spent doing lots of activities organised by our fantastic reading ambassadors.
We have started thinking about fractions in our Maths lessons this week – starting with halves and quarters. We have already made some great links with our work on division and multiplication. We have been looking at fractions of objects (e.g. half of an apple) as well as quantities of objects (e.g. half of 12 raisins).

Thank you to everyone who has attended Learning Review Meetings so far – the children have loved sharing their learning with you and explaining what we have been doing in class. Thank you for trying out our new booking system on the website too, the feedback has been really positive so far. Please do keep checking the website for updates and information. We also send information via email, so please make sure that nothing is hiding in your junk folder if you think something is missing!
