Class Weekly Update - 18th October 2018

Mr Rutter - 18 Oct 2018

Another fantastically busy week for us in Oak Class - started off with our Harvest Festival. We really enjoyed sharing our artwork in Church! A big thank you for all of the support from our lovely audience and for the kind donations to our chosen charities.

In our English work we have been completing our posters about bullying. We had to remember who they are for and the purpose of a poster like these. We are starting to get to the really exciting part of the BFG now - he is outside Buckingham Palace looking for the Queen's window! The children have been using their comprehension skills to answer questions and recall key events in previous chapters of the story. We have been looking at the illustrations of Quentin Blake, and had a go at some drawings of the BFG in class (I'm sure that many of you will have been 'wowed' by these at home too!).  He has helpfully provided some great instructions on how he draws the BFG, so we were able to produce some effective work ourselves.

We have begun our work on addition and subtraction this week in Maths. This will build on our knowledge of Place Value that we have just moved on from. We will continue to reinforce this all year round - so please do question the children about the value of numbers as much as possible (e.g. how many tens and ones, or counting in twos, fives, tens and threes). Year 1 have been looking at the value of equal and making number bonds up to twenty. Year 2 have been thinking about how they will check their calculations in this unit of work and also comparing calculations (e.g. 2+3 = 4+1, or 4+2 > 1+2).

We have been thinking about the creation story from the Bible this afternoon. We listened to the story and then made our own comic strip to show how God created the world in seven days (or six + a day of rest!). We talked about how different faiths and people of no faith have different ideas about how the world came into existence, and we will go on to make some comparisons next week.
