Autumn 2 Information

Mr Rutter - 08 Nov 2018

Welcome back after what I hope was a restful break for everyone!

The children have come back with a positive attitude to their learning, and we have all been very  impressed.

Please note, there are no stars/awards this week as it is the first week back and we have a special remembrance assembly tomorrow at 14.45pm.

A great first half-term

We had a fantastic start to year last half-term, and the children have really risen to the challenge of 'moving up' to the next year group. This can be quite a big step, but the children have all done a great job settling into new routines and getting used to the expectations of being in years 1 and 2.

We were particularly pleased with the positive attitude towards home learning from the children - they have tried really hard to read regularly at home, to look at their spelling investigations and to practise their SMIRF targets. Well done!

Morning routines

As we continue to develop our independence, we are keen to promote this further by encouraging the children to carry their own things into school each morning. The children have been really good at coming in and starting their learning straight away. To support them with this, it would be helpful if parents could allow the children to get their handwriting books and begin their practice straight away.
If you have any messages regarding alternative pick up arrangements, please pass these on to a member of staff at the door. As we begin learning straight away, we would appreciate it if we could use the end of the day to have any more in-depth conversations.

Learning

This half-term we will be exploring the last 100 years of history - this links well with our work on the Centenary of the end of WWI. We will be looking at lots of aspects of living through the last century, including music, film, technology, schooling, play, fashion and art. It would be great to have conversations about how life has changed at home to support the children. If the children have any 'artefacts' that they want to show, we will endeavour to talk about them on a Monday afternoon. We will be looking at the early part of the last century (1918 - 1930) next week.

Our class text for this half-term is Mary Poppins. We have already noticed some differences from the film that many of us have seen. We have been thinking about what might be in her mysterious bag this week. We will also use the text to help us with our DT work and make some links to our history topic.

We will be continuing to look at addition and subtraction this half-term. Towards the end of the term the children will start to think about shape and money. Please do reinforce this at home! Counting piggy bank money and spotting shapes when you are out an about is a good way of preparing them.

General messages
It is definitely feeling colder – please ensure that the children are prepared with coats, hats, gloves etc. as well as waterproofs for our outdoor work on a Friday afternoon.
As always, please do speak to any member of the Oak team if you have any questions about your child’s learning. As mentioned above, the best time to speak to us is after school.
This half-term is busy and exciting – towards the end of the term we will be having our Nativity and other Christmas activities.
