Class Weekly Update - 15th September 2018

Mr Rutter - 15 Nov 2018

This week we have continued to think about how life has changed over the last 100 years. We have been learning all about Emmeline Pankhurst and the Suffragettes. The children all agreed that it was unfair that women couldn't vote in the past and decided that even though the Suffragettes did some 'naughty' things, they were heroes. We learned about how after a long time of talking, the Suffragettes decided that 'deeds not words' was the way to get people to listen. The children wrote some amazing factfiles to tell people all about the Suffragettes. We used computers to find some pictures of the Suffragettes to go in our factfiles.

In our English work we have been looking at using commas in lists and using co-ordinating conjunctions (like and, or, but) to join two clauses together. We have started to think about how we could use this in our independent writing and our cross-curricular writing tasks as well. We have been looking at our class story of Mary Poppins and using this to help us with our new writing skills.

The children have been continuing to look at addition and subtraction in our maths work. In particular we have been looking at different methods of calculating the answers such as using a number line, or trying out column addition. On Wednesday we recapped using estimation on a numberline - which is a useful skill which will help us with our understanding of number.

Today we made our own chalk pictures inspired by the chapter we read in Mary Poppins. Next week we will use our chalk pictures to inspire some story writing. There were some lovely ideas and I am sure that Mary Poppins is going to have great adventures in these chalk pictures.

We really appreciate the support that you are giving the children in becomining more independent as they settle into their day, including reminding them to carry their own bags and coats into class each day. It it really helping them feel like they are 'grown up' year ones and twos.

Don't forget - tomorrow is Children in Need! We will be having a dress down day to raise some money for this great cause!
