Class Weekly Update - 31st January 2019

Mr Rutter - 31 Jan 2019

What a fantastic week we’ve had!

In our maths work we have started our next unit of work on multiplication and division. We have recapped counting in 2s, 5s and 10s (as this is a step that helps us with our understanding of multiplication). We have also been making some equal groups with resources, then linking this with repeated addition (for example: 4 groups of 5 makes 20 or 5+5+5+5=20). There has been some excellent reasoning this week and the children have really worked hard on this.

This week we have also continued to look at the aftermath of the Norman Conquest by trying to understand why the Normans built castles. We researched this using computers and books in our reading corner. We have also looked at the features of castles in our writing work – the children enjoyed thinking of exciting vocabulary to describe the different features within expanded noun phrases. This then helped us to write some amazing descriptions which we will be sharing with Cedar Class next week.

In our RE work we made some comparisons between Christianity and Islam and then reflected on how we show that we care about our families. We learned about the importance of families in our lives and thought about how we can show our love to them (hopefully there will be lots of tidy rooms and cooperative children at home after our discussion!).

 Reminders:
- Please remember that children can come to school in Eco-School clothes tomorrow (this is essential because it is very cold!).
- On Monday we have our Candlemass service at St. Andrew's Church at 2.30pm.
- Watch out for a letter about our upcoming school trip - this will be emailed to you along with a link to provide consent and details about costs.
- Next Friday we will be hosting Chinese New Year celebrations for our friends in Tiger Class from West Tanfield.
- Sign2Sing - you are welcome to join us for our special performance at school on Tuesday afternoon at 1pm.

This week as part of our collective worship we have been thinking about Jesus as the light of the world.
‘I am the light of the world’ John 8:12

We have looked at the teaching of Jesus in the Bible and we shared our ideas about how Jesus guides us. The children shared their ideas about the contrast of light and darkness and how this is much more than the difference between day and night. We thought that when life feels dark Jesus will help us through it.

Our wonder for the end of the week is ‘I wonder how can you shine out as light into the world like Jesus did?’
