Class Weekly Update - 24th October 2019

Mr Rutter - 24 Oct 2019

Another busy week - and the last of this half term! Over the last couple of weeks the children have been working harder than ever to show off their learning.

We started off our week by visiting our friends at West Tanfield. We spent the morning getting prepared for our 'Wedding'. We decorated our wedding cake and making some accessories to wear (including some fancy fascinators). After sharing lunch with Tiger Class, we went to the church for the wedding service. Gabriella Kirkby made promises to be friends with Charlie Tanfield. We had some lovely readings by children from both schools and we all joined in some fantastic singing. After the service, we went back to St. Nicholas School for some delicious cake (with a tier baked by each class).

In our maths, we have finished our unit on place value. We have looked at putting numbers in order (from smallest to greatest, and from the greatest to smallest). We have dones this with concrete resources, pictorially and using just the numbers. We thought about the steps we have to go through, starting with counting and know how many is in each group. Some of decided that the best thing to do now was find the smallest number, then find the next smallest. Other children decided to choose one and compare it to another and add in one group/number at a time. There was lots of fantastic discussion about these strategies.

In English, we have been planning our own version of Little Red Riding Hood. In the version of book, Little Red Riding Hood finds some flowers, acorns and honey (with a bear) in the woods. She uses these items to get rid of the Big Bad Wolf when she finds her there at Grandma's house. We went to the wildlife area to come up with our own ideas about things LRRH might use to get rid of the wolf. Today we started to write down our own version of the story using our exciting ideas!

Last week, we were the first class to win our new Reading Challenge! More than half of the children read at least 5 times at home! Let's keep it up and see if we can win it again. The challenge is that all children read at least 5 times each week. If they read more than 6 times or more then they are entered into a special raffle which will be drawn before Christmas.
