Class Weekly Update - 14th November 2019

Mr Rutter - 14 Nov 2019

Another busy week in Oak Class!

We have been challenging ourselves with our writing to tell the story of the Man on the Moon in our own words. We started by looking at expanded noun phrases at the start of the week. The children had to think of adjectives to describe the different nouns they could see in a scene from the Man on the Moon. We have also been practising retelling the story using a story mountain and pictures to prepare us for our own writing.

The children have been doing fantastically well with their reading! We have now won the school reading challenge twice! I have also noticed a real improvement in the children's confidence with their reading - thank you for all of the support with hearing them read lots at home.

In our maths learning Year 1 one have been starting our addition learning. We looked at what the addition symbol means before looking at adding numbers together using concrete resources, pictorial representations and using numbers. One of the important strategies we have looked at is the 'part-whole' model. The children use this to identify what the 'parts' are that are added together and what the 'whole' is when you have added them. Year 2 have also been exploring addition by looking at ading tens to numbers. We noticed that when you add tens, the tens change but ones stay the same. (e.g. 34+20=54)

In our topic work, we learned about civil rights activist Rosa Parks. We learned about her life and what inspired her to try to change the world she lived in. We found out about how people were treated unfairly based on thecolour of their skin, and how this led to people like Rosa Parks feeling angry. The children made their own fact-files all about her, the bus protest and how this helped to change the rules.

In our science work, we have been exploring different materials. We have been finding different materials in school and the wildlife area. We sorted them into plastics, wood, metal, fabric, paper, stone and glass. We have also started to consider whether these objects were natural or manmade.

Please note, we will not be doing Eco for the remainder of this term - therefore please can all children come to school in their uniforms each Thursday going forward. Please ensure that children do have wellies in school as we may still visit the wildlife area in other parts of our learning.

An email went home earlier with some information from Mrs Taylor - please let me know if you haven't received it.
