Oak Class Spellings - Spring 2020

These lists of spellings to learn are words that the children use frequently but that don't always match the phonics patterns learnt so far. They are words that we want to be able to write correctly without even thinking about it. 

Try to make the learning of the spellings fun and spontaneous. The spellings will not be tested weekly but instead I will be looking to see the children using them correctly within their writing, so little and often practise will help embed it better. In class we play lots of games to help us. Some ideas could be: 
- play a game where you have to write the word as many times as possible in a set time (we play this in teams and call in 'quickwrite')
- play noughts and crosses but instead of using a nought and a cross you use one of the words from the spelling list
- try writing the words in lots of different media and surfaces e.g. mark make it in some flour, or use chalk on the drive, or a stick in the mud, or use a paintbrush and water.
- play 'hide and seek' with the words: place all the spelling words face down in a pile, remove one word and hide it so it can't be seen, turn the other words over and work out which one is missing, write down which you think is missing and finally check the hidden word to see if you were right and check the spelling. 
- spell the word using alphabet spaghetti or bake cakes and use letter sprinkles to spell the words. 
- Can you do some writing with the words in, perhaps a postcard to school or a letter to a cousin or a thank you card or a story?! 

These are just a few ideas but be as creative as you like!
