Thank you to all who attended our Remembrance service last Friday.  I am sure you will all agree that our pupils spoke very sensitively at the service.  Cedar’s Remembrance prayer poems were exceptional and I was very proud of those who shared their work.  After a moving week of Remembrance work we are now continuing with our narrative writing.   We have used our ‘Author of the Month,’ Caroline Lawrence, as a WAGOLL for our Roman openers in writing.  Our purpose for writing is to produce a book of tantalising story openers to share with Palm class – I am sure Cedar’s wonderful writing will want them to read on!

This week in Maths we have been revising mental methods for multiplication and division and have now moved on to applying written methods for these operations in context.

Our history focus this week was to investigate the question: How did Britain become part of the Roman Empire?  Pupils participated in a heated class debate about the Roman invasion and whether or not the Roman army should have invaded Britain.

We have followed up our poverty workshop with reflections about last week’s session and Cedar are now working towards presenting their information and knowledge to other pupils, in order to raise awareness to others.

This week we have begun to explore ‘The Picture Book Code’.   The codes are a series of methods used for interpreting the stories in picture books and give an excellent framework for interpretation.  We brought our favourite picture books into school and discussed things such as position, colour and perspective.   We will be doing a lot of work on picture books over the next few weeks, actively discussing texts and the beliefs and personal experiences that Cedar pupils bring to them.  It’s a great way to explore common experiences and challenge thinking, as well as improving inference skills.  Our work on this will result in the making of our own picture books as well as improving our vocabulary, reading knowledge and skills.

We also looked at how the size of a book should not determine the book we choose and explored the lexical density of books that we read.  Lexical density is defined as the number of lexical words (or content words) divided by the total number of words.  Lexical words give a text its meaning and provide information regarding what the text is about. Lexical words are simply nouns, adjectives, verbs, and adverbs.  Therefore lexical density is a measure of how informative a text is.  It was interesting to compare the density of picture books to chapter books and see that challenge can be found in books that may quickly be judged as ‘easy’.  The link to the website is on our Homework page.  I was really impressed to see how enthused the children were regarding this and look forward to see them challenging themselves with books of differing lexical density in the future.

Tomorrow is Children in Need Day – we look forward to a great day of fundraising organised by our school councillors!
