What your child learns in school
In addition to the work we do in reading and phonics (see our Reading & Phonics page) the English curriculum also includes:
Speaking and Listening:
The development of speaking and listening skills is essential to children’s development and learning. We develop children’s knowledge, skills and understanding in this area through a range of activities including games, discussion, interaction and drama which involve opportunities to both speak and listen.
Written Work:
At Kirkby Malzeard School we encourage all children to think of themselves as writers. Writing gives them the power to entertain, to delight, to enlighten or persuade. Writing is a crucial skill which enables them to express their knowledge & understanding and our children are encouraged to write for a purpose from an early age. From the start of their journey through school, good vocabulary and its imaginative use is encouraged and we provide opportunities for our children to develop and deepen their learning. We teach phonics, spelling and grammar in a structured programme throughout the school and these are also incorporated in their writing
Drama is integrated in various forms such as hot seating, role play and improvisation. Children have lots of opportunities to perform for others during their time with us.  
At Kirkby Malzeard School we are committed to ensuring our children become mathematicians. Through mathematics lessons, and lessons across the curriculum, they get the opportunity to explore all curriculum aspects of mathematics including: place value, calculations, geometric reasoning, statistics and measures. We believe that securing a strong understanding of place value in the early years and key stage one is crucial to developing as mathematicians.  They are provided with a wealth of opportunities to allow them to explore the fluency aspect of maths before deepening their understanding and exploring problem solving and reasoning problems. Children are then given further opportunity to deepen their learning through DIRT tasks. We place a high importance of exploring maths in a variety of real-life contexts and ensure maths is engaging and enjoyable. In lessons, pupils are taught concepts through a concrete, pictorial and abstract cycle which enables them to gain a deep and thorough understanding into each area of the curriculum. This is mirrored through the learning environment. Alongside daily maths lessons, pupils are given the opportunity to practise and develop their instant recall facts through individual instant recall targets. Mathematics is very much a part of our school environment and we aim for a consistent approach in terms of our maths environment and marking and feedback.


Where possible we try to deliver science in a practical, hands-on way which engages and encourages our children to investigate and predict. Science may be taught as part of a theme or topic (especially in EY/KS1) but to ensure that our children have secure science skills and understanding we also teach science as a discrete subject. Within science the children use their core maths and literacy skills to help them ask questions, record observations and draw conclusions. Children experience a variety of practical activities using an increasing amount of equipment and recording methods to develop their knowledge, skills and understanding. As a school we actively engage in National Science Week and see this as an opportunity to celebrate science within the school and explore links with careers and industry. Health education, including sex education comes under the umbrella of science.

History and Geography

History and Geography are taught through a thematic “topic” approach covering the subject content outlined in the National Curriculum, ensuring coverage and progression.  Topic/ thematic work is often used to develop core skills in literacy and maths and provides a vehicle to see that skills are used and applied across the curriculum.  Where possible visits and/or visitors are actively promoted to ensure that learning can be experiential and in context such as a visits to the National Railway Museum to support EYFS/KS1 learning on Transport and  Eden Camp to support KS2 learning on a significant event since 1930 (The Battle of Britain). In geography we make the most of our environment – using our collaboration with our partner school to make the most of fieldwork and comparison opportunities.

Design Technology and Art

Design and Technology (DT) and Art are integral aspects of the curriculum in which children’s creative and artistic talents are promoted.  The curriculum covers the discrete teaching of skills, such as colour-mixing, drawing, painting, sawing wood, needle-craft and cooking. These skills are developed through our topics and themes and completed projects have include bird feeders, felt applique, healthy soup, bread etc.


The school benefits from having net-worked computers in each classroom and a bank of laptops / i-pads that can be used to ensure the children have access to a computer to support their learning. Living in a digital age is exciting and our children learn to code and program from an early age, website creation and animation are other skills the children enjoy developing. Word processing skills, data storage, retrieval and problem solving activities occur in all subjects and ICT is employed wherever it enhances the curriculum.
Keeping our children safe in all areas of school is a priority and children are taught about keeping themselves safe on-line. All of our computers, laptops and i-pads have controlled Internet access with safeguards and passwords used to ensure no child gains access to unsuitable material.

We place great emphasis on developing a love of music throughout the school, all children participate in music lessons with a specialist music teacher, developing their musical knowledge, skills and understanding.  Children have the opportunity to develop their own musical talents through specialist peripatetic teachers who cover a wide range of instrumental teaching.  These lessons are taken in school time but are charged to parents who chose them.  Musical performances are actively encouraged, providing opportunities to promote individual talents and personal confidence.

Physical Education (PE)

We aim to promote a healthy active lifestyle for all the children through fun, stimulating and inclusive Physical Education (PE) and this is delivered by class teachers and specialist PE teachers.  Over the school year the children will learn a variety of skills in their PE lessons as well as having the opportunity to attend out of school clubs such as football, multi-skills, gym and boxing. As part of the Harrogate School Sports Partnership (HSSP) we are able to offer children a wide variety of sports with opportunities to compete at higher levels.  In competitions we aim to encourage ALL children to do their best and to accept defeat as gracefully as we accept victory.
We offer swimming lessons from Year R to Year 6 throughout the school year. These take place at Nidderdale Swimming Pool with each class having one terms lessons.
Outdoor activities are widely promoted.  In Year 3 and 4 our children visited Carlton Lodge outdoor centre for an overnight stay and in Year 5/6 there is an opportunity to go for one week’s residential to Ingleborough for more challenging outdoor pursuits. These residential visits take place every other year and are joint visits with our partner school St. Nicholas.

Religious Education (RE)

As a Church of England school we aim to include the principles of a Christian faith within everything that we do and this is reflected in our school acts of worship and at special services which we hold at St Andrew’s Church in Kirkby Malzeard. These services include Harvest, Christmas and Easter celebrations and the start of each school term which are supported by members of the local clergy. The children have an act of worship every day. The North Yorkshire syllabus that we follow includes finding out about other faiths. The Dioceses encourage children from different cultural and ethnic backgrounds to work together to understand each other’s ways of life and to promote global issues.

Personal Social Health Education (PSHE)

At Kirkby Malzeard CE Primary School we believe children should learn to respect and care for themselves, each other, all adults, their community and their environment to enable them to be informed, active, responsible and healthy citizens. This aim is achieved through discrete PSHE lessons, delivering the North Yorkshire PSHE and Citizenship curriculum, and through our school ethos and culture. PSHE is explored through regular circle time, a formal PSHE curriculum, collective worship time, the school values and British values, enhancement days, themed weeks and extra-curricular activities. The PSHE curriculum is further enhanced through school activities such as School Council, Ambassadors, Reading Ambassadors and Sports Leaders.  These provide leadership opportunities for a wide range of pupils. 

Sex and Relationships Education (SRE)

Although this is not a statutory part of the 2014 curriculum we believe SRE has a vital role to play in the personal, emotional and social development of our children. The SRE curriculum covers three main elements: Attitudes and values, personal and social skills and knowledge and understanding. These are mostly delivered by the class teacher as part of PSHE and Science lessons at an appropriate level for the children.
From Year 3 upwards children are taught French by their class teacher. Children enjoy learning French through a variety of songs, games and spoken language, incorporating the North Yorkshire scheme of work. As the children progress through school they also learn to read and write in French.
