Harvest Celebration 2026

Can you help us to celebrate our local harvest?
As part of our Harvest Celebration, we would love to invite parents, farmers, allotment holders, gardeners, contractors, and anyone involved in bringing in our local harvest to join us. We would be delighted if you could come and share your experiences, helping our children to learn more about the work that goes into producing the food and resources that we all rely on every day. Together, we will give thanks for the harvest and develop a deeper appreciation of the harvest that happens all around us.
If this is something that you can help us with as a family or an individual or if you know anyone locally who might like to help us then please get in touch with Gemma Pawson (Acorn Class Teacher) gpawson@kirkbymalzeard.n-yorks.sch.uk

As part of our Harvest Celebration, we are delighted to welcome volunteers from Ripon Community Food Bank and Waste Not Wednesday. They will be joining us to share some of the wonderful work they do to support people across our local community.
Harvest is a special time for us to reflect on how we can show kindness, generosity and care for others. Over the coming weeks, we will be collecting donations to support the food bank, and we would be very grateful for your help.
There are two ways you can contribute:
  • Make a donation via the Ripon Community House JustGiving page.
  • Donate food and household items for the food bank. Please ensure that all items are unopened, in date and comply with our food allergy guidelines.
If you would like to find out more about the valuable work of the food bank or Waste Not Wednesday, please visit: Thank you for helping us live out our school values through acts of generosity and service. Together, we can make a real difference to families in our community.

Spotlights from Learning…

Acorn Class
This week in Science, we have been exploring the properties of different materials and thinking carefully about what makes materials suitable for different purposes. I wonder what objects, materials and properties you could fins to explore at home? In Maths, our Year 1 children have been learning about inequality symbols and using related stem sentences to help them compare numbers with confidence. Meanwhile, our EYFS children have been developing their subitising skills, becoming increasingly confident at recognising quantities without counting. In Phonics, Year 1 have begun learning some of the new Phase 5 GPCs and have been very excited to discover new ways that sounds can be represented in words. We have also enjoyed sharing lots of autumnal stories and have been exploring gourds and pumpkins in our exploration area. Inspired by Rosie's Walk, the children worked together to build Rosie a farm and have continued to develop their storytelling vocabulary and language skills as they retell the story in their own words. I wonder if anyone can have fun sharing our storytelling at home this weekend?

Oak Class
Oak Class have had another fantastic week of learning! We began planning our independent writing based on 'The Comet'. We explored how Nyla felt as she moved from the countryside to the city and reflected on how we might have felt in a similar situation. We have practised a range of writing techniques, created our own puppet characters and chotted down rich vocabulary to describe our settings. Our plot point planning looked brilliant and we were excited to begin writing our narratives next week. Can you tell your grown-up what your character is going to do and which writing techniques you will use?

Palm Class
We have been becoming experts in our composition of numbers to 100 these past couple of weeks. We have thought about ways that 100 can be split into equal groups and linking this to our multiplication learning e.g. 4 x 25 = 100 or 5 x 20 = 100. (Our investigations even allowed us to discover that 40 x 2.5 = 100 which was really exciting but we decided we would stick to becoming fluent in our whole numbers first!). We then moved onto look at addends that had a sum of 100. We were easily able to work out our multiples of 10 to 100 (e.g. 40 + 60 = 100) because we knew about our number bonds to 10. So we looked at all pairs of addends that had a sum to 100...we noticed a beautiful mistake that lots of people might make when thinking of this e.g. 36 + 74 We now know this has a sum of 110. This has helped us be careful when finding pairs of addends to 100. I wonder if you and your child can explore this beautiful mistake at home, perhaps they can help you not make it!

Cedar Class
This week, Cedar class have been circuit detectives, using our knowledge of electricity and circuits to find out why some circuits work and others do not. Examining pre-drawn circuits and deciding what we think will happen when we build the circuit to test it, checking our prediction and recording our results and reasoning. Why not discuss how the lights in your house work on a circuit with your child and the role of the switch - how it affects this circuit.

Class Collective Worship
Each week one of our Collective Worship sessions takes place in class with a focus on something in the news. Attached is a take home that you might like to think about and share with your child at home.
